Sales
Skills
Sales is a competitive market and as a result,
it is very important to develop skills and abilities
that will set you apart from your competitors.
One of the most important sales skills to have
is to sell yourself. This most likely will help
sell your ideas and therefore your products. If
you can be an amiable, friendly and compassionate
person with strangers, you have a good chance
of being able to sell almost anyone almost anything.
There have been many books written on sales skills
and they continue to be written as the sales landscape
continues to change rapidly. There is also the
fact that the are many different sill levels,
some of which can specifically relate to what
you are selling or the fact that you are a woman.
Depending on what you are selling, the simple
fact that you are a woman can be a huge benefit.
Similarly, there are still many industries that
don't accept women as equals, and as a result
there are few, if any female executives in a company.
In cases such as this, sales skills do not much
matter, as two candidates with the same test scores,
the same sales skills, and the same resumes would
not test equally on the mind of the hiring executives.
Males simply can be more effective when attempting
to sell to other males, no matter what their skills
are. There is still a stigma in this country that
men are smarter than women, and men are almost
always taken more seriously than men in social
as well as professional situations. Personally,
I believe that it is much more apparent in the
professional world than in a personal setting.
It certainly behooves a woman to posses any type
of sales skills. These are used in almost every
day encounter you can think of. The small things
like eye contact and smiling as well as treating
people with respect can make a day at the market
more pleasurable or getting an estimate on the
damage on your car less painful. Good sales skills
will open up doors to retail, management, advertising,
and many other jobs. The key thing about a career
in sales is that you are in control and you have
the ability to push forward and make the most
of yourself and your job. It is important to take
steps to hone your sales skills which will increase
your success. In terms of sales skills, it is
important to continually try to challenge yourself,
setting realistic goals that will push your performance
to the next level. Try setting goals on a weekly,
monthly, and yearly basis.
As cliche as it sounds, your enjoyment of your
job comes through to every customer you speak
to. If you have a bad day, the customer feels
that as well. So keep yourself energized, getting
up and walking around, brainstorming creative
ways to approach the same things, and getting
connected with your customer and your product.
Your attitude is everything.
