Business
Sales
Business sales are at the forefront of everyone's
minds these days. With a new administration and
the rapidly weakening economy, anyone who is involved
with any type of business sales is thinking about
tightening their company's belt in order to just
survive. Cutting costs to stay afloat in a worsening
economy seems to be a rapidly growing practice
these days. These costs include expenditures such
as travel for sales reps as well as business executives.
Even expenditures that may seem small such as
business lunches can add up and cost the company
quite a bit over the course of a year.
Unfortunately another popular and effective way
to cut costs is to lay off employees. Not only
are companies in the private sector resorting
to this type of tactic, but also so are government
institutions. Kansas for example, has suspended
income tax refunds and is actually having a problem
paying their current employees on time. Their
plan is to layoff the lower workers such as prison
guards and those office workers with the least
seniority.
Business sales have been down since the 2nd half
of 2008 and continue to fall. There was much speculation
by the talking heads of the people in the media
that the 2008 holiday season would be one of the
worst on record due to harder than usual financial
times. Indeed, there were many families last year
that had to tighten the purse strings and cut
down on spending due to job losses in the family
or the increase in interest rates that were attached
to the refinancing that many people chose to do
while the rates were low and the requirements
were loose. Once the interest rates went up, their
mortgage rates went up and many were unable to
or struggled to make their payments on time. In
my opinion, this had a huge impact on business
sales in 2008. People simply had to scale back
in their purchases of items that were not absolutely
necessary. As a matter of fact, the effect was
even worse for many families struggling to make
ands meet. The combination of an increase in mortgage
payments coupled with a job loss in the household
can be devastating.
Many families in Florida, for example had no
other choice but to simply let the house go into
foreclosure proceedings. They had to depend on
friends and family members to help with lodging.
Some temporary and some not so temporary. Many
families were force to move out of state for employment
opportunities or simply to move in with family
members who offered help in their time of need.
There are thousands of homes that now sit empty,
waiting for foreclosure proceedings to being processing,
and many families still unable to find work in
this area. Because of the decline of the housing
market, many laborers were force to go where the
jobs are currently. As a result, many business
sales in the area have taken a huge downturn and
there is no recovery in sight in the near future.
